What is dojo kun?

The Dojo Kun is a set of five guiding principles recited at the end of every karate session at JKS Glasgow. Rooted in the traditions of Shotokan karate, these values form the ethical and philosophical foundation of our dojo. They are not just words, but actionable standards that guide our behaviour—both during training and in everyday life. The Dojo Kun is integral to our mission: developing strong, resilient, and principled individuals who contribute positively to their communities.

JKS Glasgow Dojo Kun: The Five Principles

  1. Exert Oneself in the Perfection of Character

Life is unpredictable, and effort does not always guarantee immediate results—whether in exams, sports, or careers. Karate instills resilience and the determination to pursue self-improvement, regardless of setbacks. This principle encourages students to develop a strong character, equipping them to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and integrity.

  1. Be Faithful and Sincere

Integrity means being honest with yourself and others, keeping promises, and staying true to your values—even when no one is watching. Faithfulness and sincerity build trust, respect, and lasting relationships, both within the dojo and beyond. This principle underscores the importance of aligning actions with words in all aspects of life.

  1. Cultivate the Spirit of Perseverance

Challenges are universal. Whether facing academic hurdles, work pressures, or personal difficulties, perseverance is key. Karate teaches the value of resilience and kindness, transforming setbacks into opportunities for growth. By cultivating perseverance, students learn to approach obstacles with determination and a positive mindset.

  1. Respect Propriety

Respect is at the heart of karate. It encompasses valuing instructors, classmates, and oneself, and extends to honoring community and relationships outside the dojo. Practicing respect creates a positive, inclusive training environment and fosters stronger connections in wider society.

  1. Refrain from Impetuous and Violent Behaviour

Karate is not about aggression; it is about self-control, discipline, and emotional intelligence. Training encourages students to manage their emotions and actions thoughtfully, promoting personal growth and equipping them to handle life’s pressures with composure and confidence.

Why Do We Recite the Dojo Kun?

Reciting the Dojo Kun at the end of each session reinforces these core values, reminding us that karate is more than physical training—it is a lifelong journey of character development. These principles are universal, applying to all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. By embodying the Dojo Kun, we strive to build a community grounded in respect, perseverance, and integrity, both on and off the mats.

Experience the spirit of traditional Shotokan karate—where character comes first.
